Being a part of Minnesota Pork’s inaugural Activate class has been such a wonderful opportunity and learning experience. We have been able to meet so many great people and travel to different events for continued education and training. Our most recent session took us to St. Paul to learn more about the legislature and participate in Minnesota Pork Producers Association (MPPA) Day on the Hill.
Taking part in MPPA Day on the Hill was a great opportunity for our Activate Class. Before visiting the Capitol, we had the chance to participate in learning sessions and a legislative panel. We began with some presentations by staff at NPPC. I have a new appreciation for all the work they do at NPPC, especially with how engaged they are with policy and their role in always being on the lookout for different bills or proposed laws that could negatively impact the pork industry and agriculture in general.
During our time in St. Paul, we also met with Commissioner Thom Petersen, Commissioner Katrina Kessler, Senator Aric Putnam, and Representative Paul Anderson. I enjoyed hearing their perspectives, priorities, and learning that they have science-based approaches and want to do what is best for everyone in Minnesota.
We sat in on a Senate Environment, Climate, and Legacy Committee hearing. Being present during a committee hearing was a new experience for me. It was fun to watch how they are run and to see a bill introduced, the testimony, and questions. It made me realize others have different passions and we are all trying to make Minnesota a great place to continue living and working.
To round out session 3, we spent a Day on the Hill. I was able to meet with Representative Marj Fogelman and Senator Bill Weber. I appreciated being able to meet with the individuals who represent me and having conversations with them. It was great to hear they have similar perspectives on things and will continue to support the pork industry.
Minnesota Pork members met with 32 Senators and Representatives, allowing us to discuss concerns in the industry and show our gratitude for all they do! I was amazed at the number of bills and topics debated during each session and how important it is to vote for individuals who can help support and advocate for agriculture.
Activate: Session 3 has helped to give me a better understanding of how our government works and all the people it takes to ensure our freedom to operate. I’m excited to continue participating in MPPA Day on the Hill in the future and appreciate the opportunity to do so. I hope to meet with more local and state government officials to continue to allow the voice of Minnesota pig farmers to be heard. I would urge others to do the same, whether it be a letter, call, or in person meeting, it all makes a difference in having our voices heard and ensuring the future of the pork industry for generations to come.
