Minnesota Pork board request for proposals
Minnesota Pork Board logoThe Minnesota Pork Board (MPB) is soliciting research proposals for 2009.
All research proposals to be considered by MPB must be submitted to

the National Pork Board through its application web site:

The deadline to submit proposals is 5 p.m. CST on November 25, 2008

After the National Pork Board receives the proposal it will be reviewed by technical advisors and pork producers. The MPB Research Committee members will select projects that are one-year in length at its 2009 March meeting.

The projects will be evaluated using the following criteria:

  • The National Pork Board grading of the project.

  • The relevancy to the Minnesota pork industry.

  • The length of time before project results can be used by pork producers.

The following categories are the 2009 Minnesota swine research priorities:

(Although these are the MPB funding priorities, the MPB will entertain other proposals

if no satisfactory priority proposals are received.)

  • Energy

    • Methods to reduce on-farm energy use in pork production (i.e. propane, electricity.)

  • Housing

    • Evaluation of building design and operation to reduce energy use.

  • Modeling Pig Farms

    • Financial and production models to evaluate the potential impacts of changing existing stall gestation systems to pen gestation or another production scheme with consideration on the impact to workers and sows in the areas of facility flow-through, animal welfare and worker safety.

  • Employee Development

    • Development and evaluation of tools to measure employee attitudes.

    • Evaluation of incentives for employees.

    • Evaluation of employee attitudes and its relationship to pig performance.

  • Euthanasia Techniques

    • Development of science based euthanasia techniques

    • Safety for the animal handler

    • Humane to the animal

  • Growth Promotion and Feed Efficiency

    • Research, validation and development of non-antimicrobial growth promotion and feed efficiency products

  • Manure Separation

    • Novel manure separation and component utilization.

Other information pertaining to MPB 2009 research projects:

  • The funding limit is up to $30,000 per one-year proposal and all projects are for one-year in length.

  • Proposals are to be submitted through the web site by 5 p.m. CST on November 25, 2008.

  • Project selections will be made at the March 2009 Research Committee meeting.

  • Notification of grant awards will be made in April 2009.
