Blue Earth County

HOG NUMBERS

  • Blue Earth County ranks second in Minnesota pork production.
  • Last year, Blue Earth County pork producers sold 1.03 million market hogs.

ECONOMICS

  • Gross income generated last year from the sale of Blue Earth County hogs was $139 million. (Gross income is the amount of money received by the farmer prior to paying expenses related to raising their pigs.)
  • In just one year, Blue Earth County pork production generated $389 million into the economy. (Each $1 in gross income that the farmer receives generates $2.80 into the economy.)

VALUE ADDED

  • To feed the county's 1.03 million hogs requires 10.8 million bushels of corn and 3.9 million bushels of soybeans.

The pigs that are raised in Blue Earth County provide a valuable fertilizer for cropland. Without soil fertilizer, crops will not produce to their full potential and the soil becomes depleted of nutrients. Swine manure is locally available and university research shows that swine manure improves soil's productive qualities and water-holding capacity. Swine manure replaces costly imported, synthetic, petroleum-based commercial fertilizers.
