Swine Breeds
The eight major purebred swine breeds

Virtually all market pigs are produced by crossing purebred breeds to take advantage of hybrid vigor, also known as heterosis. Heterosis is a biological phenomenon in which the offspring of two separate breeds performs better than the average of its parents. Crossbred offspring grow faster, produce more pigs per litter, have lower mortality rates and convert feed to meat more efficiently.
